Is the Wi-Fi at home slow? Find a reason for a useful family worker at such a time & a guide to improvement

It's not just to buy something more.

Is there anyone who works from home and thinks that "the network line is too slow"?

Although it is very comfortable in the company, it is a pity that the connection is unstable at home. The reason, maybe it's Wi-Fi.

So, this time, I will thoroughly explain the reasons for the slow Wi-Fi at home and the ways to improve it. Letz, Wi-Fi!

Four reasons why Wi-Fi is slow

The reasons for the slow Wi-Fi at home are roughly divided into four.

1. There's something wrong with the professionals.

There are more network connections at home than before, due to congestion from suppliers, or slower network lines at home due to modems / Wi-Fi routers rented from suppliers.

two。 There are problems with computers, tablets, smartphones and other terminals.

Wi-Fi slows down due to a change in the settings of the device connected to the Wi-Fi, or a hardware problem.

There is a problem with the installation location of the 3.Wi-Fi router

The location of the Wi-Fi router set up at home is not suitable, where the radio waves cannot reach, the speed of data communication becomes slower and the connection becomes unstable.

There is a problem with the 4.Wi-Fi router setup

This is the mode where there is a problem with the connection due to a change in the settings of the Wi-Fi router used.

To sum up, the phenomenon of "slow Wi-Fi" can be considered as these reasons. This is why the Wi-Fi router is not good! "suddenly bought the latest Wi-Fi router," my computer … Oh, is it too late? "even if you think about changing the computer, it won't solve the problem.

To improve the slower Wi-Fi, don't panic first, find out what the cause is, and take a solution. Look, don't read Amazon, read this article!

Four things I want to prepare in order to find out why.

Start by finding out why Wi-Fi is slow. At that time, you need the following things, so get ready.

Computers, tablets, smartphones and other models that can connect to the Internet (not one)

Local area Network Cable (LAN)

USB-LAN conversion adapter (if the computer does not have a wired LAN terminal)

Drive (without this, you will be frustrated along the way)

The above things are ready, go and find the reason right away. It is recommended that you try it sequentially from above.

First, connect through the wired LAN to confirm that the speed of the line itself is appropriate. If the speed occurs, proceed to cause investigation 2.

If the speed is slow, you may find that there is a problem with the modem (optical line terminal (ONU) to be exact) / Wi-Fi router, which is leased from a line or vendor on the vendor side. Solutions are as follows:

Solution 1: contact the supplier or connect to the supplier's website to check if the line is faulty or construction is in progress nearby

If it is due to the construction caused by the supplier's line failure and maintenance, it will be eliminated over time, so please wait.

In addition, recently, we will remotely diagnose our own ONU/Wi-Fi router from the supplier. Therefore, if the ONU/Wi-Fi router finds a failure, please swap.

In particular, if there is no failure on the vendor side and the ONU/Wi-Fi router is normal, the line itself may slow down, try the following methods:

Solution 2: confirm that you are connected through IPv6

IPv6 is the latest communication standard. In the past, the IPv4 standard was the mainstream, IP addresses (addresses on the Internet are the same thing. There are fewer vacancies assigned to each device connected to the Internet, so what is newly created is IPv6. If it is an au system, it should correspond to IPv6 in advance. In the case of Fritz Optical, there is a provider of IPoE that supports the combination of IPv4 and IPv6. Using IPoE may improve speed, so let's contact the provider we are using. For providers that support IPv6 IPoE, please check it here.

Solution 3: change the vendor

If you do not connect through IPv6, the vendor does not support IPv6. Because you don't want to improve, consider a change in the supplier.

If it is a detached house, the change of professionals can be carried out without any problem. However, in the case of collective housing, the building is used as a unit to sign contracts with specific professionals, and families share the line. In this case, please check with the landlord and the management company to see if you can sign the line alone. If OK, sign up with another professional manager.

Try to improve the above things, then the problem will be solved. If there is no improvement, investigate reason 2.

Identify cause 2: confirm speed through stable Wi-Fi

If there is no problem in reason 1, there may be a problem with the Wi-Fi environment. So let's connect computers and tablets to Wi-Fi (such as Internet connections) where you know the speed is stable.

Here, when all terminals have speed, enter the reason to find out 3. If only a specific terminal is slow, go to cause finding 6.

Reason 3: move the terminal close to the Wi-Fi router

If there is nothing wrong with the line and the Wi-Fi router is working, try to bring the terminal close to the Wi-Fi router.

If communication is accelerated due to proximity, try to find out reason 4.

Even if close, the communication speed is still very slow, enter the reason to find out 5.

Find out reason 4: change the location of the Wi-Fi router

If the communication speed is improved by finding out the reason 3 to make the Wi-Fi router and equipment close, it can be said that there is a problem where the Wi-Fi router is installed. So let's change the installation site of the Wi-Fi router.

Ideally, it is installed near the center of the house. Also, things that don't block the waves around (microwave ovens, metal shelves, sinks, vases, earthen walls, etc.) are important. In addition, let's put it as high as possible.

In other words, move to a place where there are no obstacles and good prospects.

If it is difficult to move the location, or if moving does not have much effect, try changing the wireless band of the connection. Recently, faster "5 GHz" connections are mainstream, but some Wi-Fi routers support "2.4 GHz" connections. The 2.4 GHz band has lower speed and response than the 5 GHz band, but it is easier to reach the range. In places where the airwaves of the Wi-Fi router are not easy to reach at home, it is also good to use 2.4GHz to connect.

Reason 5: re-examine the settings of the Wi-Fi router

If the previous project is not improved, there may be a problem with the Wi-Fi router. But I waited for a while before changing! First confirm the status of the Wi-Fi router that is currently in use.

Slow speed may be because the Wi-Fi router is too tired. Let's restart it again. The method of rebooting varies from Wi-Fi router to router. Please check it yourself.

If it does not improve after the reboot, there may be too many connected devices. Turn off the Wi-Fi connection on all devices and try it on a smartphone. If normal, add another one, add another one and terminal, confirm how many are the limit.

Also, don't forget to update the firmware of the Wi-Fi router. Most Wi-Fi routers have a setting to update firmware automatically, but disabling this setting will keep the old firmware state forever. Update automatically if possible. When updating manually, download and update the latest firmware from the manufacturer's website.

If you think this is still too slow, please check the settings of the Wi-Fi router. In particular, I would like to confirm the following items.

Time

Check that the "current time" in the Wi-Fi router information is correct. If this is crazy, communications will slow down. Most Wi-Fi routers automatically get the time when they connect to the Internet, but if you are crazy, the Wi-Fi router may be damaged. If it is not repaired after a reboot, replace the Wi-Fi router with repair.

Send output

This depends on the name of the Wi-Fi router. Many Wi-Fi routers have the ability to adjust the output of radio waves to be sent. If the output power is low, it is difficult for the radio waves to reach over a wide range. If the transport output is set low, set it to the maximum value.

Support for 5 GHz

The latest Wi-Fi routers support 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz. However, the 5 GHz band may be set to invalid. Ensure that 5 GHz is valid from the settings. If not, enable it.

Note that if you are using a Wi-Fi router that does not support 5 GHz (only 2.4 GHz), you may be able to take this opportunity to replace it with a product that supports 5 GHz.

Reason identified 6: reconsider the setting of the terminal

If the line and ONU/Wi-Fi router are working but the communication speed is slow, there may be a problem with the connected terminal. Let's confirm the following.

Applications that stop large amounts of data communication

Among the applications used on computers and smartphones, there may be applications that consume communication bandwidth. Use operating system features to check the communication status of applications and stop applications that use a lot of data communication.

Restart the terminal

When you encounter difficulties, you'd better restart it. Computers, tablets, smartphones, etc., restart first. This alone can be improved.

In addition, if it is a computer, a fundamental reset is also effective. In the case of Windows, a BIOS reset is performed, and in the case of macOS, PRAM cleanup and SMC reset are performed. However, because these are for advanced people, it is better to ask detailed people to do it if you are not familiar with the computer.

Remove the cover and decoration

To make your terminal more stylish, try to take them off when installing lids and boxes, or decorating them with stickers. It's possible that something unexpected blocked the reception of the radio waves. Nudity is the best!

Update the Wi-Fi driver

The decline in communication speed is due to the old driver of the Wi- Ficard installed on the terminal. In this case, update the Wi-Fi driver.

Typically, the Wi-Fi driver is installed automatically when the operating system is updated, and if the operating system is older, update it to the latest version.

You can also install drivers separately in Windows. Depending on the model you are using and the Wi-Fi card installed, please confirm the manufacturer of the Wi-Fi card from device Manager and update it from Update driver to the latest driver.

Don't panic about the failure of Wi-Fi, deal with it seriously

Even if you say "Wi-Fi is slow", the reasons are different. We can't immediately determine what the cause is.

If you find it strange, don't panic and find out why. Problems may be found in unexpected places.

If this article can help you solve the Wi-Fi problem, that would be great.
