＜目次＞この記事は前編です中編後編――グーグル日本法人での活動を踏まえ、これまでのグーグルのテクノロジーの流れやビジネスの変遷などをお聞きしていきます。まず、『グーグルが消える日』を読んでどう思われましたか？率直な感想を教えてください。辻野 晃一郎氏（以下、辻野氏）：とても興味深い本ですね。テクノロジーの変遷とこれまでIT業界を築き上げてきた人物たちを時系列につなぎながら、グーグルに至る系譜や必然性、グーグルの限界、あるいはGAFA（グーグル、アマゾン、フェイスブック、アップル）の限界に関しても述べています。著者は、どちらかというとGAFAに対して否定的な見解を持っていると思われますが、今、できるだけ多くの人に読んでほしい本だと思いました。――書籍の冒頭で「グーグルは、単なる一企業ではなく、まさに『世界のシステム』になった」とも表現しています。辻野さんから見て、グーグルがここまで世界を席巻できた理由は何だとお考えですか。辻野氏：ここまでの存在になったグーグルの起源はラリー・ペイジとセルゲイ・ブリンという2人の天才です。彼らがスタンフォード大学にいたときに「世界を丸ごと作り変えたい」という野望に燃え、今のグーグルのコア・コンピタンスである検索エンジンをつくったことが原点となっています。成長を加速させたのはエリック・シュミット（CEOや会長を歴任）です。私がグーグルに入社したのも彼がいた時代です。エリックは経営のプロとしてグーグルを今日の姿に成長させる上で大きな貢献を果たしました。彼はグーグル以前にもさまざまな企業の経営を経験していますが、自著『How Google Works 私たちの働き方とマネジメント』において、「（グーグルでは）自分が今まで身に着けてきた常識を出さないようにした」と記しています。私もグーグル入社時にまったく同じことを感じました。世間の常識とは異なり、世間的に見れば非常識なことをやる会社だからこそ短期間で一気に成長できたと考えています。自分がソニーで学んだことも含め、「グーグルには外から平凡な常識を持ち込まない方がいい」と入った瞬間に思いました。エリックも同様、「世の中に普通にある物差しをグーグルに持ち込んではいけないということを早い段階で気づいた」と振り返っています。それほどグーグルとは普通ではない存在なのです。その原点には、ラリーやセルゲイが描いた新しい世界を作るという強い思いがあったと思います。実はこれは、私が以前いたソニーに通じるところがあります。同社は、日本が敗戦国というどん底の立場からどうやって国を再興するかという時代に生まれたテクノロジーベンチャーでした。日本発で世界を変えるという大きな野望や世界観を持った会社であったことにグーグルとの共通点を感じます。もともとソニーも一代で世界企業になり世界の人たちから称賛された日本を代表するすごい企業です。時代、国籍、業態こそ違いますが、エネルギーのレベルでいうと同じような感じでしたね。――「世界を作り変える」という信念が、具体的にどこに表れていると感じられましたか。関連記事▲ Close ▼ All display
辻野氏：グーグルは株式上場する時、株主に宛てた手紙で「普通の企業にならない」という決意表明をしています。ソニーの創業者の井深 大氏も設立趣意書に同じことを書いています。両社ともに、ほかの人がやったことがないことや世の中に存在しない価値を新たに生み出すことに対する強いこだわりを持っていました。グーグルの原点である検索エンジンには、当初からさまざまな競合サービスが出ていました。それまでインターネットの世界を制していたのは、Yahoo!のディレクトリ型の情報検索スタイルでした。しかし、情報量が爆発的に増えることで追いつかなくなり、それに代わる手段として検索エンジンが生み出されました。ラリーはマルコフ連鎖を基に「ページランク」というアルゴリズムを考えて画期的な検索エンジンをdevelopmentしました。この本を読んで改めて感じましたが、コンピューター産業史の中で、ある意味、ラリーがそこにたどり着いたのは必然だったのではないか、ということです。成長を続ける膨大な情報空間をうまく整理する手法として検索エンジンを実現したことは、まったく想像を絶することではなかったでしょうか。今まで誰も成し遂げたことがなくて、やろうともしなかったこと、あるいは、やろうとしてもあきらめていたことなどを実現できたことが、世界を席巻できた理由でもあると思います。――グーグルが策定した「グーグルが掲げる10の事実」は、「ユーザーに焦点を絞れば、ほかのものはみな後からついてくる」など“ユーザーファースト”に通ずるものがあります。一方、この本ではグーグルのデータセンターにおいてSecurityに対しての配慮が欠けているという指摘もあります。この点についてはどのように受け止めましたか。辻野氏：ここで著者が指摘しているのは、グーグルだけが配慮が欠けているというよりは、インターネットそのものが元々持っているSecurityへの甘さだと解釈しました。GAFAなどのデジタルプラットフォーマーによって、個人のデータが中央集権的に管理されるようになり、そこから情報が漏れることは、意図的にしろ事故にしろ、どうしても起きてしまう問題です。グーグルのデータセンターがうんぬんではなくて、現状のインターネットが最初から抱えている潜在的な問題が大きく露呈し始めています。このままではいけないということでデータの帰属の問題と合わせて議論の対象になっているのではないでしょうか。グーグルがSecurityに対して認識が甘いとか、対応がずさんという指摘はまったく違います。グーグルはSecurityに対して非常に厳格です。社内のSecurityポリシーも明確で、厳格なガバナンスが効いていました。Securityを軽んじているようなことはありません。グーグルが掲げる“10の事実”の中に「悪事を働かなくてもお金は稼げる」がありますが、これをあえて掲げるところにグーグルのすごさがあると思います。現場の社員には正義感や倫理観が強い人が多かった印象です。ちょっとした悪事もすぐに見つけて、自浄作用がたちどころに働く会社です。たとえば最近のトピックとしては、ドローンを使った軍事技術developmentプロジェクトの中止や、社外のAI倫理諮問委員会の中に差別主義者がいるという理由で発足直後に解散になった事例など、大勢の現場社員の反発が組織の方向性を正すということがありました。これは、グーグルでは「Wisdom of Crowds」が機能していることを示しています。グーグルでは、トップの権力者がどう言おうが、良からぬことには現場の1人ひとりの倫理観や正義感が歯止めをかけるという体質があるのです。現在、企業や官公庁などでデータ改ざんが問題となっている日本でも顧みるべき部分だと思います。Securityに対する記述がないのは、「10の事実」はグーグルが創業当時につくられたものなので、当時はそこまで意識していなかっただけだと思います。――本書では世界中で多くのモノやサービスがほぼ無償になるという「限界費用ゼロ社会」に関する指摘もあります。ただ一方で、限りなくゼロに近づいても絶対にゼロではならないという考え方だと思います。サービスを利用する際、本来は対価を払うことは当然ですが、もうユーザーにとってインターネットサービスは無償であることが当たり前になっています。そのため、ユーザーはGAFAなどの企業が自身の情報を別のことに使っていることに違和感を覚えるかもしれません。辻野氏：データの帰属の議論にも関わる重要なテーマですね。インターネットが社会インフラになってから、色んなものが無料で手に入るという「フリー」な世界が当たり前になっています。それによって、大きなパラダイム転換が起きました。【次ページ】グーグルの弱点と最大の脅威Recommended article
