Apple Watch saves the life of an 85-year-old man who has fallen in the cold.12 minutes after the report, firefighters call

Since January of this year (2022), a fierce cold wave has hit the east coast of the United States, and it has been hit by the coldest in the last few years. Meanwhile, an 85-year-old man living in Georgia in the southeastern United States fell outdoors below freezing, but it is reported that he was quickly rescued thanks to the fall detection function of Apple Watch.

Local media CB546 News Atlanta reports that the man (anonymous) was found near the implant 12 minutes after Apple Watch reported to authorities. At this point he was half unconscious and was very cold to the touch due to the freezing temperatures. The man was then reportedly taken to the nearest medical facility for treatment and safely discharged.

According to the Deputy Director of the Morrow City Fire Department, the Apple Watch report did not give the man the exact location. When the members of the fire department arrived at the scene with the police force, they noticed that there was no patient there and immediately started searching the surrounding area.

The fire department claims that it could have been "definitely" worse (if the rescue was delayed) due to sub-zero temperatures and the man's chronic illness. I don't know any further details, but the rescue in just 12 minutes from the report must be a prompt response, and it seems that if left unattended in the frigid cold for a long time, it could lead to the worst.

The fall detection function that was credited this time is installed in Apple Watch Series 4 or later. It's turned off by default, and is automatically enabled only when you set your age when setting up your Apple Watch or in the Healthcare app, and you're 55 or older. This 85-year-old man seems to have been enabled by default, but if you're younger, you'll have to set it manually.

If the wearer falls, the built-in sensor will detect it, and if no action is observed for the next minute, the emergency call service will be contacted. In addition, a message is sent to the registered emergency contact information (relatives, etc.) with the location information of the wearer, and "where the fall occurred" is also notified.

This function and the emergency call function of Apple Watch have saved many lives, and the true story is introduced in the advertisement video of Apple Watch Series 7. If you have children or the elderly in your family, you may want to give an Apple Watch as a gift.
