Automatic transfer from camera to "Google Photos"-Canon announces new cloud service

On February 13, Canon announced the photo/video cloud platform "image.canon" based on the concept of a "connected camera" that integrates the camera and the cloud. It is a successor service to "CANON iMAGE GATEWAY" which ends in mid-March, and aims to start the service in early April.

"image.canon" smartphone app

By uploading photos to image.canon, you can edit on the cloud, link with external services, store data, share on SNS, print to a printer, etc. A platform that makes it easier to use photos and videos on web services. At the beginning of the launch, automatic transfer to other companies' cloud services such as Google Drive and posting to SNS and YouTube will be available.

Photos and videos uploaded to image.canon are stored with unlimited data for 30 days. After the passage of time, select and move to the prepared 10GB cloud storage, or automatically transfer to Google Drive (supported in April), Google Photos (after June), or Adobe Creative Cloud (after June). Even after 30 days have passed, thumbnails equivalent to 3 million pixels will be stored in image.canon for a long period of time. In addition, it is said that there is no plan to link with Amazon Prime Photos, which can store RAW etc. at the moment.

Aiming to be a cloud platform where photos and videos can be used on various web services by uploading photos to image.canon once. Automatic transfer directly to image.canon

There are two methods for uploading from the camera to image.canon: accessing directly from the camera, using a PC or smartphone. To upload from the camera to image.canon, connect the camera to Wi-Fi and manually select and transfer the photos. It is said that models that support manual upload will be announced after the service starts in April, but it seems that not all models that support Wi-Fi connection will be targeted.

On the PC, by setting up image.canon in advance, you can connect to the PC via Wi-Fi simply by activating the camera. Automatically backed up and uploaded to image.canon as is. This is compatible with the EOS Kiss X10i announced on the 13th. Also, the smartphone app allows you to upload and view photos, but it doesn't seem to have an automatic backup function from the camera.

In addition, the development announcement of "EOS R5" supports automatic transfer to image.canon. Once you enter the pre-configured Wi-Fi network, simply turn on the camera to upload untransferred photos and videos directly to image.canon. In other words, just by turning on the power of the camera, you can automatically transfer to Google Photos etc. without a PC.

In the future, AI and 5G will be used to remotely enjoy photos and videos taken at outdoor events in real time, RAW editing on the cloud, shooting assistance according to the photographer's preferences, etc. We will propose ways to use cameras that are connected to a network.
